Ohio House Bill 104 requires a criminal records check of an applicant for an initial license for a number of professions including accountants, contractors, and dental hygienists . . . but not state legislators.  The bill passed committee and is going to the house but an amendment requiring checks on legislators was voted down.  Apparently what's good for the public doesn't apply to Ohio lawmakers.  View Bill Folder.

Federal Union Objects to Background Investigations

The National Federation of Federal Employees union has objected to background checks for 725 General Services Administration (GSA) workers.  The employees have less than 15 years seniority and were reportedly missing the required background investigation which is needed to comply with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12.  HSPD12 requires all federal employees and contractors to have new high tech ID cards to access government computers and offices.  An employee could be terminated if the results of the investigation were not found “suitable”.  The union is filing an unfair labor practices charge because they reportedly have not been provided information on the investigative process or given an opportunity to meet with GSA officials.  GSA has released a statement indicating it has provided all the applicable information concerning HSPD12 that is permitted to be released by law.
