The Oklahoma Supreme Court rescinded the rule closing selected online court records and redacting information from court files. A statement issued by the the court on 3/25/08 indicated the ruling was withdrawn to provide further study and consideration.
A California PI has an interesting blog regarding public records. Most of the material pertains to California Government but he also provides information on documents, pacer filings, notable cases and other items. A recent decision by the OK Supreme Court requires filers to redact personal data identifiers including SSN's, taxpayer ID's, names of minors, dates of birth, financial account information and home addresses from all pleadings or other documents filed with the court. Filers also have the option to redact other information including personal identifying numbers, medical records, employment history and financial information. Internet access will be immediately limited to court dockets only. The effective date of these rules is June 10, 2008. View court opinion.
On February 28, Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas) and three cosponsors introduced H.R. 5515l. The purpose of the legislation, which would replace the E-Verify system operated by the Homeland Security Department, is to stop the use of stolen identities and fraud used by illegal aliens to gain employment.
The concept of this legislation is not new. Since 2007, the Human Resource Initiative for a Legal Workforce has actively advocated for reforms to the current employee verification system. The Human Resource Initiative was founded by the following human resource organizations: American Council on International Personnel, College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, HR Policy Association, International Public Management Association for Human Resources, and the Society for Human Resource Management.
